The history of salt
Salt is an ionic compound made of sodium and chloride ions.
Its ability to preserve food was a founding contributor to the development of the Jews, Greeks, Chinese and other ancient civilizations.
It helped eliminate dependence on seasonal food availability and made transporting food over long distances possible. However, salt was often difficult to obtain, so it was a highly valued commercial item, and even some people considered it a form of currency.
During the last years of the Roman Empire and throughout the Middle Ages, salt was a precious item that was transported on the roads to the most important cities.
The word “salary” comes from the Latin word “sal”. Even sometimes the Roman legions were paid in salt.
Populations located along the salt-traffic roads demanded heavy tariffs and taxes on salt that passed through their territories. This practice caused the formation of important cities in the areas which those roads were located.
On the other hand, its mining sources have also played a prominent role in determining the power and location of the world’s great cities. For example, in the nineteenth century Liverpool rose from a small English port to become the main salt export port of the Cheshire mines.
Salt has also played an important role in strategic war development. n the United States history, it was an important factor. During the American Revolutionary War, the British intercepted the salt shipments of the revolutionaries to interfere with their ability to conserve food.
